< Season 73 UAAP seasons Season 75 >

UAAP Season 74 is the 2011–2012 athletic year of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. It is being hosted by Ateneo de Manila University. The men's basketball and the women's volleyball tournaments are aired by ABS-CBN Channel 2 and Studio 23 (the men's basketball gamess are simulcast over DZSR Sports Radio 918) for the twelfth consecutive year. The opening ceremonies was held on July 9, 2011 at the Marikina Sports Center.[1]

PreseasonEdit

Season host Ateneo de Manila University presented an Olympic-style opening ceremony which included a parade of athletes and a torch relay. The opening ceremony, which also featured a group of Ateneo graduates singing the UAAP theme song, was held on July 9 at the Marikina Sports Park. Contingency plans were made in case of rains so that the ceremonies would not have to be called off due to inclement weather. The torch relay made its rounds among member schools and culminated in the lighting of the torch. Basketball games started on the next day at the Araneta Coliseum.[2]

The torch relay started in the De La Salle University campus and passed thru the campuses of the other seven member schools of the UAAP. It ended in the Marikina Sports Park. Former Ateneo basketball player Olsen Racela was the torch lighter in the opening ceremonies. The Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion and Spongecola's Yael Yuzon provided entertainment during the ceremonies.[3]

The opening ceremonies proceeded as scheduled despite continuous rains at the Marikina Sports Park. The parade of athletes proceeded with the athletes carrying colored umbrellas corresponding to their school colors. The following schools make up the UAAP: Ateneo de Manila University, Adamson University, De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, National University, University of Santo Tomas, University of the East, and University of the Philippines.[4]

Opening ceremonies Edit

The opening ceremonies took place at the Marikina Sports Park on 9 July 2011. It was the first time that the opening ceremonies took place in an open field. The highlights of the opening ceremonies were the presentation of the UAAP board of directors, parade of athletes, torch relay, cauldron lighting, and free concert.

University of Santo Tomas had the largest delegation with 627 athletes. It was followed by Ateneo de Manila (600), University of the East (512), University of the Philippines (425), De La Salle University (417), Adamson University (300), Far Eastern University (300), and National University (260).[5]

A torch relay took place prior to the event. The relay started from the De La Salle University campus in Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila. The torch was brought by La Sallian athletes to the Adamson University campus in San Marcelino Street, Ermita, Manila. It was then transferred to the University of the East campus in Claro M. Recto Avenue, Sampaloc, Manila. UE representatives then conveyed the torch to the nearby Far Eastern University campus along Morayta Street. The FEU participants next carried the torch to the National University campus in Jhocson Street, Sampaloc, Manila. From there, the NU athletes relayed the torch to the University of Santo Tomas campus in España, Manila. Thomasian athletes continued the relay and went to the University of the Philippines Diliman campus in Quezon City passing through Welcome Rotonda and the busy highway of Quezon Avenue. From Diliman, the UP athletes accompanied the torch to the Ateneo campus in Loyola Heights in Quezon City. The Ateneo delegates completed the relay when they finally reached the Marikina Sports Park and handed over the torch to Olsen Racela, a former Ateneo star basketball player. Racela then lighted the cauldron with the torch after being lifted by a hydraulic conveyor.
